
Algorithmic Bias as a New Frontier of Gender Inequality
Introduction
In late 2025, an unusual protest appeared on LinkedIn. Several women users began wearing fake moustaches and changing their pronouns on profiles. Surprisingly, many noticed a sharp increase in visibility, reach and engagement. This triggered a serious debate on whether algorithmic systems favour male profiles, highlighting a new form of gender inequality operating through technology.
From an anthropological lens, this episode reveals how patriarchy is not limited to family or society but is embedded even in digital systems.
Algorithms Are Not Neutral
Algorithms are designed by humans and trained on existing data. Therefore, they often reproduce social prejudices already present in society. Global studies clearly support this argument:
- A Google AI experiment (2016) showed gender stereotyping such as:
“Man : Computer Programmer :: Woman : Homemaker.”
- Joy Buolamwini’s MIT research revealed facial recognition software performed worst on Black women, due to datasets dominated by white male faces.

These examples prove that technology reflects the values of dominant social groups, reinforcing gender hierarchies rather than eliminating them.
Visibility vs Vulnerability Paradox
Anthropologically, increased visibility for women does not automatically mean empowerment. Instead, it creates what scholars describe as a visibility–vulnerability paradox. As women gain more visibility online, they also face higher risks of:
- Cyber-stalking
- Doxxing
- Circulation of morphed images
- Technology-enabled harassment
Marginalised women—especially those facing intersections of gender, caste and class—experience compounded vulnerabilities. This supports the intersectionality framework in feminist anthropology.
Law Lagging Behind Technology
Technology evolves faster than legal systems. Laws related to AI, deepfakes and cyber safety remain reactive and fragmented worldwide. A positive example comes from the United Kingdom, where a women-led campaign successfully pushed for stricter laws against deepfake pornography. This shows the importance of gender-sensitive legal reforms rather than generic technological regulation.
Structural Patriarchy and System Design
Anthropologist Nishtha Satyam’s statement—“Violence is not a default mechanism; it is a design mechanism”—captures the core anthropological insight here. Patriarchy is embedded in:
- State institutions
- Laws
- Family structures
- Cultural norms
- Digital platforms
Therefore, minor adjustments are insufficient. Entire systems, including the internet and governance frameworks, need redesigning.
